A house is an evolving record of life and should be flexible to change over time. The site was a subdivision of a large Linden erf and the vision was to create a (sub)urban village – achieving within the constraints of a single residential zoning an office studio with living above, cottage and garages with a studio flat above, all centred around an arrival courtyard aka the “village square”.  The concept was to build a flexible living and working environment – an extension of the live-work unit explored in earlier projects. The plan is a ‘single room wide’ arrangement allowing for easy ventilation and light penetration. A veranda runs along the length of the house and all rooms open out onto this outdoor space. The idea of outdoor rooms is taken through from the veranda into an enclosed rooftop deck room that has distant views over the city.
