Pan Africa House is located in the heart of ‘Little Addis’ in the Johannesburg CBD. The building is a conversion of a former office building into a new retail-residential hybrid typology. This is a vertical shopping mall spanning four floors and the basement with five residential floors above. The retail floors contain a range of different shops selling a variety of goods as well as two large restaurant areas. Sightlines and display are paramount. Shop spaces may contain several vendors. Vendors vie for customers through competing intensities of display and interaction. In order to achieve this a series of intricate planning moves were required.
